Off the cuff downtown pittsburgh lunch rankings

1. lydiah's, seriously you have to try this place, it's my absolute favorite, intersection of grant & boulevard of the allies

2. madonna's - decent gyro etc

3. wesley's deli - in the lobby of a bank building. pretty questionable premise

4. simpatico espresso - if you want to drink the healthy but gross green vegetables this is the place to be

5. the la palapa truck - this is really no 5. in your playbooks, no 1 in your heart type situation but i don't know if they can be trusted to supply amazing authentic taco's throughout the winter

6. pizza diamond, pnc park - pittsburgh pizza is apparently viewed as scandalously bad by eastern PA media but got damn if a slice from the pizza joint in PNC park isn't some tasty shizz

7. meat & potatoes, grit & grace, butcher & rye - these places are probably all pretty good; can we get a better naming convention for upscale downtown pittsburgh restaurants please. i am also 0/3 on menu choices at meat & potatoes; it might actually just be bad

8. the hot dog truck in mellon park outside william penn hotel - meh but the guy seems pretty cool. you could do worse

9.  the commoner - pretty expensive and i'm still not convinced its remotely quality; jury still out on this one

10. bob's sub - this place has one of the weirdest sizing structures of any sub restaurant i've ever heard of. a sophomore is 4.5 inches, then you jump all the way up to 9 inches with a junior. consider me a super sophomore bc all i want is a 6 inch bob's sub and the last time i went there i straight up threw out 1/3 of my junior. really strange

dishonorable mentions:

sree's indian - a dave favorite when i interned at federated investors; this place is tempting for its proximity to the illusive $5 lunch price point but ultimately is a garbage indian place that will make you sick

qdoba - i don't appreciate subsidizing guac eaters

bea taco town - no free water; a lot of people get their orders screwed up eating here with me, price > quality, genuinely hope they don't succeed on smithfield street

sienna mercato - this f-ing place has the confusing naming convention that includes 3 different names in their penn ave location and another name in market square. so sick of having coworkers obsessed with their meatball of the month

moe's - learn how to wrap a burrito dorks

5 guys burgers and fries - basically all the chain restaurants in downtown pittsburgh should be held to a lower standard; that said 5 guys is chronically mistake prone bad food that will make you sick for work in the afternoon

tom brady is a cheater

  1. Could we please get the Smithfield Street McDonald's on this list? I ate many a 20 piece during the trying times at Lehman in 2008.
